Lionel Messi-led Inter Miami failed to secure victory against FC Cincinnati, ending their match early Thursday morning in a 2-2 draw within the Major League Soccer competition. The result impacted the team’s standing in the Eastern Conference table as they slipped to third place following New England Revolution’s 3-2 win over New York Red Bulls.

Match dynamics and late goals

Inter Miami started strongly, with Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez opening the scoring in the 61st minute. This goal placed his team in a favorable position to claim three points. However, FC Cincinnati refused to concede defeat, finding an equalizer through Kenji Mboma Dem in the 80th minute. Samuel Geddes then added a second goal six minutes later, putting the home side ahead and bringing them closer to a significant win in the race for playoff qualification.

Geddes’ goal resulted from a fast counterattack, finished with a shot from the edge of the penalty area, suggesting Inter Miami might leave without any points. As the match approached its conclusion, Felipe Requejo scored the equalizing goal for Inter Miami in the 90th minute. It marked his first goal in the MLS, granting his team a valuable point in a contest characterized by late score fluctuations.

Requejo’s strike came from the left side of the penalty box, mirroring the location where Suarez had scored Inter Miami’s initial goal, thereby denying FC Cincinnati the victory. Evanander nearly secured a winning goal for Cincinnati during stoppage time with a dangerous close-range shot near the penalty spot. Inter Miami defender Ian Fry intervened with his body to clear the ball, finalizing the encounter at 2-2.

Eastern Conference standings impact

The draw affected Inter Miami’s position in the Eastern Conference standings, pushing them down to third place after New England Revolution defeated New York Red Bulls 3-2. New England increased their tally to 58 points, leading Inter Miami by two points. Both teams have two matches remaining in the regular season, heightening the importance of their upcoming direct confrontation.

Upcoming decisive fixtures

Attention shifts to next Sunday’s match, when Inter Miami visits New England Revolution in Foxborough, Massachusetts. This fixture could play a critical role in determining both teams' rankings in the Eastern Conference and their seeding for the playoffs. Inter Miami has two regular-season games left, starting with the New England clash before hosting Charlotte on November 7.

Conversely, FC Cincinnati missed the opportunity to move closer to officially securing playoff qualification. They required a win against Inter Miami combined with Columbus losing to Dallas to confirm their advancement in this round.
