Messi Leads World Cup 2026 Golden Boot Race with Mbappe and Haaland Close
Lionel Messi tops the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot standings with five goals, closely followed by Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, each making strong starts.

Lionel Messi currently holds the lead in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Golden Boot competition after scoring five goals in the opening two matches.
The Argentina forward achieved a hat-trick against Algeria and followed it with two goals against Austria, bringing his total World Cup career goals to 18. This tally places him two goals ahead of Miroslav Klose, the previous record holder.
Kylian Mbappe has scored four goals so far, including two against Iraq during a heavy rainstorm on Monday, placing him just one goal behind Messi in the Golden Boot rankings. His 16 career World Cup goals put him two behind Messi on the all-time scoring list.
Erling Haaland has matched Mbappe’s four-goal total, adding two goals against Senegal to the two he scored versus Iraq. Haaland has become Norway’s top World Cup scorer after just two games.
With Argentina, France, and Norway all assured of advancing to the round of 32, their coaches might consider resting key players. However, Messi, Mbappe, and Haaland appear intent on maximizing their goal counts during the tournament.
Other notable goal scorers include Germany’s Deniz Undav and Canada’s Jonathan David, both surprising contenders for the Golden Boot. Undav has contributed three goals and two assists despite limited playing time, while David scored a hat-trick against Qatar after failing to score against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
England’s Harry Kane has two goals from a single appearance. With upcoming matches against Ghana and Panama, Kane is expected to climb the scoring charts by the end of the group stage.
