Mourinho hails Cucurella's defensive masterclass against Yamal

A decisive defensive contribution from left-back Marc Cucurella proved instrumental in Real Madrid’s 2-1 triumph over Barcelona at Camp Nou. The victory saw the Spanish international effectively neutralize the threat posed by teenage winger Lamine Yamal throughout the match.

Mourinho highlights tactical discipline

Following the fixture, head coach Jose Mourinho commended Cucurella for maintaining his composure against one of world football’s most promising talents. The manager noted that the encounter represented perhaps the most difficult individual challenge of the defender’s career to date.

"The kid is very good and difficult because, besides being good, he's clever," Mourinho stated regarding Yamal’s performance. He further observed that the Barcelona player attempted various tactics to provoke a booking, but "Cucu held his own very well."

The Portuguese tactician emphasized that while the result was a collective achievement, Cucurella emerged victorious in his personal duel against a high-caliber opponent. This resilience laid the groundwork for Madrid’s organized defensive structure during the critical away game.

Rotation strategy maintains freshness

Mourinho attributed part of this success to a deliberate policy of rotating full-backs, which allowed him to manage playing time effectively across the squad. By selecting Cucurella over Alvaro Carreras, the coach ensured the starter remained physically sharp for the high-intensity demands of El Clasico.

"We have two top-level left-backs, which also allows me to manage playing time a bit," Mourinho explained. He pointed out that Carreras had featured in the previous Wednesday match, freeing Cucurella to focus exclusively on preparing for the Barcelona clash.

The manager reflected on the quality available within his ranks, noting that observing the players’ dedication and proximity during training sessions reinforced his understanding of their capabilities. This depth enables continued rotation to sustain physical intensity as the team competes on multiple fronts.

Upcoming schedule and squad depth

Cucurella’s strong showing underscores the defensive options available to Real Madrid as they navigate a congested calendar. With the immediate battle secured, attention now shifts to the next challenge, as the club prepares for an upcoming trip to Santander scheduled for next weekend.
