A street sign bearing the name "Lionel Messi Way" has been installed on a section of Sherman Avenue in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. The temporary and honorary designation, confirmed by local authorities, is not a permanent official name change for the road.

The initiative was organized by the town's "World Cup 2026 Task Force," a committee that includes representatives from local government, educational institutions, sports organizations, and businesses. The goal is to build excitement for the tournament, which kicks off next month across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The new sign was placed near an Argentine-themed café, coinciding with the unveiling of a World Cup-themed mural. Berkeley Heights is located roughly 40 kilometers from MetLife Stadium, which will host the 2026 World Cup final on July 19.

Mayor Angie Devaney stated that the World Cup represents a global event that brings people together through sports and shared passion.
