Portland Timbers part ways with Phil Neville after MLS struggles
Phil Neville and Portland Timbers have mutually agreed to end their partnership following a series of disappointing MLS results.

Following a challenging run in Major League Soccer, Phil Neville has parted ways with the Portland Timbers through mutual consent. The club currently ranks third from bottom in the Western Conference and trails the automatic play-off spots by eight points.
The decision to end Neville’s tenure came after Portland’s 3-1 loss to San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday, which left the team struggling near the bottom of the conference standings. The club officially announced Neville’s departure on Monday.
Club management reflects on coaching change
Portland Timbers’ general manager Ned Grabavoy expressed gratitude for Neville’s dedication during his time with the team. Speaking on the club’s official website, Grabavoy noted, “Phil brought enthusiasm and passion to the role, and it was a pleasure to work with him. We wish Phil all the best in his next opportunity.”
Grabavoy also acknowledged that the club had not achieved the progress anticipated under Neville’s leadership. “This offseason we had pointed discussions about the areas we needed to build on and improve. Ultimately, we have not seen the progress we’ve needed to, and, most importantly, results have fallen well short of expectations,” he added.
Neville’s tenure marked by mixed outcomes
During his time with Portland, Neville oversaw a record-breaking scoring season and guided the team to two play-off appearances. However, these achievements were tempered by early eliminations and inconsistent performances. Neville himself recognized the shortfall in results, stating, “I realize we are in a results business, and the results haven't been to the expectation of this football club.”
He addressed the club’s supporters directly, saying, “To the Timbers Army - you are the reason I felt inspired to try and bring success to this club. Keep getting behind the players and the club in this wonderful city. I will miss you all.”
Portland seeks new leadership ahead of MLS break
With the MLS calendar approaching a break for the World Cup, Portland aims to find a new head coach who can strengthen the team’s defensive capabilities and renew their bid for a play-off position. This pause in the season offers the club a chance to regroup and adjust their strategy for the remainder of the campaign.
For Neville, this departure represents another setback in his coaching career. Despite his strong reputation as a former player, his recent managerial stints in MLS have presented challenges that may affect his prospects for securing future top-level coaching roles.
