The former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has condemned Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from the Portugal national team camp during the recent international window. Rooney questioned how his ex-teammate managed the public dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus, describing the actions as incorrect on multiple levels.

Condemnation of squad withdrawal

Ronaldo left the training base following a conflict over playing time that began after he remained unused during a 2-1 UEFA Nations League win against Norway. The 41-year-old forward had warmed up for 30 minutes before the match but did not enter the field. Ahead of the game against Denmark, he issued a statement accusing Jesus of "breaking his word" and likening himself to Pele and Diego Maradona.

This public apology to teammates while criticizing his manager drew sharp rebuke from Rooney. Speaking on The United Stand, the English legend asked, "Why?" noting the timing coincided with Lionel Messi retiring from Argentina. Rooney stated that undermining the manager, teammates, and the Portuguese FA was "just wrong in every sense." He added that it was uncomfortable to witness from the perspectives of a player, teammate, and manager.

Shared history at Old Trafford

Rooney and Ronaldo played together under Sir Alex Ferguson between 2004 and 2009. During this period, they won three Premier League titles and the Champions League. The Portuguese winger transferred to Real Madrid eight years before Rooney left Manchester United.

Despite their past success, Rooney expressed particular anger over a section of Ronaldo’s statement that dictated what Jesus should have said in a pre-agreed press conference. "You can't tell a manager what he's got to say," Rooney said. "That just goes beyond anything I've ever seen."

Federation suspension and investigation

The Portuguese Football Federation imposed a provisional suspension on Ronaldo on October 10. This measure awaits an urgent independent disciplinary investigation into the incident. Consequently, the forward is barred from national team activities ahead of next month’s international window.

Ronaldo previously worked with Jesus at Al-Nassr, winning silverware and recommending him for the national team role after the 2026 World Cup. Despite the current standoff, Jesus has maintained his authority while leaving room for resolution. Ronaldo insists he remains available for future selection.
