A potential disciplinary investigation into Jorge Jesus hinges entirely on the submission of a formal complaint, as reported by Portuguese outlet CM Jornal. The coach’s conduct toward national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo has sparked controversy, yet no proceedings have been initiated against him at this stage.

Conditions for sanction procedures

Any review of Jesus’s behavior during his tenure leading Portugal would only commence if an official grievance were lodged. Currently, the threat of sanctions against the coach depends solely on whether such a complaint arrives. No decision has been made to open proceedings, leaving the matter as a mere possibility rather than an active inquiry.

The report attributes the issue to what was described as inappropriate conduct by Jesus toward Ronaldo while he was in charge of the national side. This characterization stems from the escalating tension between the two figures, which has shown no signs of diminishing in public discourse.

Ronaldo’s protest and absence

The crisis erupted when Ronaldo walked out of Portugal’s training camp 24 hours before the match against Denmark. This game took place during the third round of the UEFA Nations League group stage. Following that departure, the forward also missed the subsequent fixture against Norway in the fourth round. Portugal secured victories in both encounters despite the captain’s absence.

Ronaldo’s exit served as a direct protest against statements made by Jesus during a press conference. The coach had insisted that he held the authority to exclude any player from the squad, emphasizing his role as the head of the team. This assertion triggered the immediate reaction from the star forward.

Competing narratives and penalties

In a lengthy statement, Don Cristiano claimed that Jesus had broken promises to him twice. He laid out the sequence of events from his own perspective, detailing the grievances that led to his withdrawal. As of now, the coach has not provided his version of the incident.

Ronaldo himself is not immune to potential punishment. The Portuguese Federation retains the authority to sanction him for leaving the camp. Possible penalties range from a simple financial fine to a suspension lasting up to six months.
