The Spanish Football Federation has officially announced that the 2026–2027 Spanish Super Cup will take place in Istanbul, Turkey. The decision follows the inability to hold the tournament in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which had hosted the most recent editions of the competition.

Why the move from Saudi Arabia

The relocation stems from scheduling conflicts arising from Saudi Arabia’s planned hosting of the AFC Asian Cup in January next year. That overlap prompted the Spanish Football Federation to seek an alternative venue for the Super Cup.

Tournament dates and participating clubs

The upcoming edition of the Spanish Super Cup is scheduled for February 2–7 next year in Istanbul. Four clubs will compete: Barcelona, champions of La Liga; Real Madrid, La Liga runners-up; Real Sociedad, winners of the Copa del Rey; and Atlético Madrid, Copa del Rey runners-up.

Other candidate nations considered

Prior to selecting Istanbul, media reports indicated Egypt and Qatar were among the countries under consideration to host the tournament. The Spanish Football Federation ultimately designated Istanbul as the host city.

Return to Saudi Arabia planned for 2028

Spanish Super Cup matches are expected to return to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia starting with the 2028 edition.
