Barcelona faces Atlético Madrid with key absences, forcing Hansi Flick to reshuffle his defense and midfield for the La Liga top-spot battle.

Hansi Flick confronts a significant tactical challenge as Barcelona prepares to face Atlético Madrid tonight at the Metropolitano. The match carries high stakes, with the top position in La Liga currently on the line for both clubs.
The German coach lost Rodri last Tuesday during the encounter with Aston Villa. The midfielder exited the field limping due to a hamstring injury that is expected to keep him sidelined for approximately one month. This absence rules him out of the trip to Madrid.
However, positive news emerged regarding Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen, who have received medical clearance. Garcia suffered a rectus femoris muscle injury in his right thigh against Real Betis on October 17. Although the initial prognosis suggested a three-to-four-week recovery, the Spanish defender returned in just three weeks. Flick indicated during yesterday’s press conference that Garcia might even be ready to start.
Christensen began the season strongly before sustaining an injury in Seville on September 19. The Danish defender experienced a problem in the rectus femoris muscle of the quadriceps in his left leg, with an anticipated absence of around six weeks. While this period concludes this week, Flick will not risk starting him despite his travel to the Metropolitano.
The return of two defenders helps stabilize a back line severely impacted by injuries. Xavi Espart and Jules Koundé remain unavailable, according to reports from Sport newspaper. Additionally, Flick’s reluctance to utilize Baldé has prompted a rethink regarding the right-back position. Bryan Gil, who arrived from Valencia, is a potential candidate for this role. Alternatively, the coach could deploy Eric García in a defensive unit already featuring Pau Cubarsí, Gerard Martín, and João Cancelo.
Replacing Rodri presents another complex puzzle for the lineup. In the previous match against Aston Villa, Flick selected Marc Bernal, who performed well alongside Pedri in the second half. Bernal now competes directly with Frenkie de Jong for a starting spot. The Dutchman has accumulated more playing time since recovering from an injury sustained during the 2026 World Cup.
Mundo Deportivo forecasts a 4-2-3-1 formation for Barcelona. Joan Garcia is expected in goal. The defensive line may consist of Bryan Farinas, Pau Cubarsi, Gerard Martin, and Joao Cancelo. In midfield, Marc Bernal and Pedri or Fermin Lopez are projected to anchor the team, with Anthony Gordon providing width. Raphinha is likely to lead the attack.
Atlético Madrid also faces personnel issues. Cristian Romero remains out due to a muscle injury, while Johnny Cardoso misses the game because of a thigh problem. Morten Hjulmand returns to the squad after sitting out the Bayern Munich match. Lee Kang-in may rejoin the starting eleven alongside Julián Álvarez.
Simeone is expected to employ a 4-4-2 setup. Oblak will guard the goal. The defense comprises Marcos Llorente, Marc Pubill, David Hancko, and Javi Galán. Giuliano Simeone, Pablo Barrios, Morten Hjulmand, and Álex Baena form the midfield. The attacking duo consists of Lee Kang-in and Julián Álvarez.
