A recent international study has revealed a connection between individuals’ preference for one of football legends Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo and their political inclinations as well as personality traits, attracting considerable attention in sports and social circles.

Researchers from Nanyang Technological University conducted a survey involving over 10,000 participants across 26 countries to examine the relationship between respondents’ favorite player and their political orientations and personality patterns, according to the British newspaper Daily Mail.

Political Leanings Associated with Player Preference

The study found that those who favor Messi tend to adopt more liberal political views, whereas Ronaldo supporters are more inclined toward conservative opinions. Dr. Saifuddin Ahmed, the lead researcher, explained that the general public image of each player may influence this tendency. Messi is often perceived as a calm figure emphasizing teamwork, while Ronaldo is known for his high self-confidence, individual achievements, and personal ambition.

The researchers noted that people are frequently drawn to public figures who reflect their own values or worldview. The correlation between player preference and political stance was more pronounced among younger age groups and diminished notably with increasing age.

Social Media Influence and Personality Traits

The findings also indicated that users of social media platforms, particularly TikTok and Instagram, showed a stronger preference for Ronaldo. The researchers attributed this to Ronaldo’s strong digital presence and the impact of his media image on these platforms.

Additionally, the study revealed that individuals with higher self-confidence levels were more likely to favor Ronaldo, who embodies qualities such as ambition, achievement, and personal confidence. Conversely, Messi’s supporters tended to associate with traits like calmness, humility, and a focus on teamwork.

Computational Model Predicts 2026 World Cup Winner

In a related development, researchers from the University of Liverpool presented results from an advanced computational model that ran 1,000 simulations of the 2026 World Cup to identify the teams with the highest chances of winning the title.

Spain topped the predictions with a 26.1% chance of winning, followed by England at 17%, France at 13.5%, Argentina at 12.4%, and Portugal at 10.6%. The model also identified Norway as the tournament’s “dark horse,” with a surprising opportunity to compete for the championship.

Golden Boot Race Forecast

The simulation anticipated a strong competition for the Golden Boot between Erling Haaland and Mikel Oyarzabal, projecting that each would score more than five goals during the tournament.

This study opens avenues for further research into the interplay between sports, personality, and ideological leanings, especially given the widespread global popularity of Messi and Ronaldo.
