Tottenham's wage offer challenges Man United in Mateus Fernandes pursuit

Tottenham Hotspur’s readiness to offer substantial salaries to key targets this summer could hinder Manchester United’s efforts to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, whose valuation stands near £80 million.

Manchester United has been negotiating for the Portugal international for several weeks, with Michael Carrick identifying midfield reinforcement as a priority. Fernandes’ qualities in energy, ball progression, and technical skill align with United’s rebuilding plans.

Tottenham’s aggressive market approach

Tottenham has demonstrated a willingness to invest heavily in the transfer market. Their £80 million offer for Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali was rejected, and they have also been linked with Marcus Rashford.

Rashford’s salary at Manchester United is expected to increase to approximately £325,000 per week next month, and reports indicate Tottenham would be prepared to match such wage demands, signaling their commitment to acquiring established attacking and midfield players for manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Manchester United’s cautious wage policy

In contrast, Manchester United aims to maintain a disciplined wage structure. Chief executive Omar Berrada emphasized the necessity of resisting pressure from agents and market forces in decision-making, a stance reflecting lessons from past costly contracts.

Fernandes is represented by Jorge Mendes’ Gestifute agency, which also manages United players Leny Yoro and Manuel Ugarte, potentially facilitating negotiations. Nevertheless, United is intent on avoiding excessive wage offers.

This situation tests Manchester United’s revised transfer strategy. While Fernandes would strengthen the squad, declining unreasonable salary demands is part of fostering a sustainable club model.

Although United remains interested in Fernandes, Tottenham’s financial willingness may complicate the pursuit.
