Thomas Tuchel singled out Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contribution following England’s victory over the Czech Republic in Prague. The Real Madrid defender provided the assist that broke the deadlock, marking a successful return to the starting line-up after a period of exclusion from international selection.
The right-back silenced critics by setting up Anthony Gordon for the opening goal. This performance offered Tuchel tangible evidence of Alexander-Arnold’s attacking quality on the international stage. England entered the Nations League fixture seeking redemption after a 3-2 loss to Spain at Wembley.
This start was Alexander-Arnold’s first since October 2024, when he played left-back under interim manager Lee Carsley against Finland. At 27 years old, he became the ninth different right-back utilized by Tuchel across 24 matches. Despite previous omissions, including absence from the recent World Cup squad, the player capitalized on this opportunity.
England controlled possession but faced resistance from a disciplined Czech defence early on. The dynamic changed in the 25th minute when Pavel Sulc received a red card for a reckless challenge on Elliot Anderson. Two minutes into the second half, Alexander-Arnold tracked back to regain possession before delivering a precise right-footed cross.
The ball bypassed three defenders to find Gordon, who headed home clinically. Alexander-Arnold had also demonstrated intent with a 70-yard supporting run shortly before the goal. His creative range remains a primary asset, though defensive solidity questions persist.
Tuchel praised the defender’s professionalism and decisive action during an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live. "He did very well. He had an excellent assist," the German coach stated. He noted that Alexander-Arnold’s deeper positioning in the second half proved more effective than his higher role in the first half.
"We never doubted that he can produce these kinds of assists," Tuchel added. He acknowledged the psychological impact of the early red card, which complicated the task despite England’s professional overall performance.
With this display, Alexander-Arnold aims to retain his place when England faces Croatia on Saturday. A victory is required to maintain hopes of reaching the Nations League knockout stage. Both teams currently sit level on three points in their group.
