Contrasting institutional expectations

The midfielder emphasized Manchester City’s uncompromising standards: “Manchester City have to win every trophy they compete for. In every competition we play in, we have to compete and win, because this club’s history demands that.” He contrasted this with his time at Chelsea, where he characterized the environment as transitional and lacking the consistent domestic dominance seen at City.

Reunion with Enzo Maresca

Fernandez credited former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca—who recently moved to take charge at Manchester City—as instrumental in facilitating the transfer. “We were both very eager for it to happen,” he said, noting the negotiations were protracted. “It wasn’t easy for me to be here today… but I know he also made a big effort, speaking to the club, and I’m grateful that he did that.”

Fernandez’s arrival concludes a £326 million midfield investment by Manchester City this transfer window. That total includes the earlier acquisitions of Elliot Anderson for £116 million and Ayyoub Bouaddi for £85 million.
