Brazilian-British Study Links Abdominal Obesity, Vitamin D Deficiency to 123% Higher Mortality Risk After Age 50
A six-year study of 5,520 adults over 50 found those with both abdominal obesity and vitamin D deficiency face a 123% higher mortality risk than those without either condition.

A joint research effort by scientists from the Federal University of São Carlos in Brazil and University College London in the United Kingdom has identified a pronounced mortality risk associated with the co-occurrence of abdominal obesity and vitamin D deficiency among adults aged 50 and older.
Study Design and Cohort Details
The investigation, published in the journal *Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism*, tracked 5,520 individuals for six years. All participants were over the age of 50 at enrollment. Researchers sought to assess how the simultaneous presence of abdominal obesity and low vitamin D levels influences all-cause mortality.
Mortality Risk Quantified
Results showed that individuals exhibiting both abdominal obesity and vitamin D deficiency faced a mortality risk elevated by up to 123% compared to those free of both conditions. Abdominal obesity was defined as waist circumference exceeding 102 cm in men and 88 cm in women. Vitamin D deficiency was classified as serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration below 30 nmol/L.
Individual and Synergistic Effects
Each factor independently increased mortality risk: abdominal obesity alone correlated with a 47% rise, while vitamin D deficiency alone correlated with a 91% rise. When present together, the effect exceeded simple addition. The researchers explained that visceral fat sequesters vitamin D within adipocytes, limiting its bioavailability in circulation. Additionally, obesity impairs enzymatic activity required for vitamin D metabolism, further reducing functional vitamin D availability.
Biological Mechanisms and Health Impacts
Vitamin D plays a critical role in immune regulation and inflammation suppression. Its deficiency—combined with excess visceral fat—contributes to chronic low-grade inflammation, accelerating cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, and muscle atrophy. These adverse interactions intensify with advancing age.
Broader Physiological Consequences
Prior findings from the same research team linked low vitamin D status to reduced muscle strength, slower gait speed, loss of independence in daily activities, and heightened risk of memory impairment and cognitive decline. The vitamin also modulates blood pressure, cardiac function, nervous system activity, immune responses, and endocrine regulation—meaning its depletion affects multiple vital physiological systems.
Clinical Recommendations
The researchers emphasized that monitoring serum vitamin D levels and reducing excess abdominal fat constitute two fundamental interventions to help lower premature mortality risk in adults aged 50 and above.
