Each Extra Hour of Weekend Meal Timing Shift Raises Men’s Heart Disease
A French cohort study of over 104,000 adults linked each additional hour of difference between weekday and weekend meal timing to a 14% higher risk of cardiovascular disease among men—but found no statistically significant association in women.

A seemingly harmless weekend habit—shifting meal times—may carry measurable cardiovascular consequences, according to new research published in the journal *Communications Medicine*. The study identifies a phenomenon termed “meal timing misalignment,” drawing an analogy to jet lag: a biological disruption triggered not by air travel or crossing time zones, but by inconsistent daily eating schedules between workdays and weekends.
How meal timing misalignment is measured
This metric does not reflect a single delayed or advanced meal. Instead, it quantifies the difference between the midpoint of an individual’s daily eating window on workdays and the midpoint of that same window during weekends. For example, if someone eats from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays—giving a midpoint at 1 p.m.—but shifts to eating from noon to midnight on weekends—the midpoint moves to 6 p.m. That represents a five-hour misalignment. The shift may also occur in the opposite direction, with earlier meals on weekends relative to weekdays.
Study design and participant profile
The analysis drew on data from 104,806 adults enrolled in the French NutriNet-Santé study between 2009 and 2023. Participants’ average age was approximately 43 years, and women constituted 79% of the cohort. Dietary intake—including timing of foods and beverages—was self-reported through repeated online food frequency questionnaires. Researchers then tracked incident cases of cardiovascular disease for a mean follow-up period of 8.1 years.
Cardiovascular outcomes observed
Over the follow-up period, researchers documented 2,368 incident cases of cardiovascular disease. These included 1,270 cases of coronary heart disease and 1,098 cases of cerebrovascular disease. No statistically significant association was found between meal timing misalignment and stroke risk.
Gender-specific findings
Among men, each additional hour of meal timing misalignment correlated with a 14% higher risk of overall cardiovascular disease and a 21% higher risk of coronary heart disease. In contrast, no statistically significant association emerged for women across any cardiovascular endpoint examined.
Directionality and timing nuances
The study found elevated risk whether meals were advanced or delayed on weekends compared to weekdays—suggesting inconsistency itself, rather than mere delay, is the relevant factor. The association was most pronounced among men whose eating midpoint advanced by more than one hour during weekends. However, the researchers noted limited participant numbers in certain subgroups, urging caution in interpreting those specific subgroup differences. A stronger association also appeared among individuals who consumed their first meal later in the day.
Potential biological mechanisms
Human physiology operates via internal circadian clocks that regulate sleep-wake cycles, digestion, hormone secretion, blood pressure, and insulin sensitivity. Meal timing serves as a key environmental cue that helps synchronize peripheral clocks in organs such as the liver and gut. Repeated, substantial shifts in eating schedules may therefore induce desynchrony between behavioral patterns and underlying biological rhythms. This remains a hypothesized mechanism; the study does not establish causation between meal timing changes and cardiovascular disease onset.
Limitations and practical implications
The study is observational and relies partly on self-reported dietary timing. It assumes standard workdays run Monday through Friday—a structure not universal across occupations or cultures. The cohort, drawn from the French NutriNet-Santé study, exhibited higher health awareness than the general population, and its female-majority composition constrains generalizability. Established cardiovascular risk factors—including diet quality, physical activity, sleep duration, smoking status, and body weight—remain foundational. Yet the findings introduce a novel dimension to heart health: beyond *what* we eat, the question arises—does the body also need predictable cues about *when* the next meal will arrive?
