Research indicates that reducing body temperature could suppress malaria parasite reproduction, offering a potential supplementary treatment approach.

Dr. Taichi Odagawa, an assistant professor in the Department of Tropical Medicine at Geichi Medical University, reported that altering the body temperature of an infected individual may inhibit the proliferation of the malaria parasite, potentially aiding in the disease's treatment.
The doctor highlighted findings from a recent study which demonstrated that placing the malaria parasite in an environment cooler than the normal body temperature suppresses its multiplication.
The study was conducted on the tropical malaria parasite both in laboratory conditions and using a mouse animal model. Results from both scenarios showed that lowering the temperature contributed to reducing parasite growth.
One possible explanation for this effect is the impairment of the parasite’s ability to invade new red blood cells. The malaria parasite reproduces inside red blood cells and periodically exits them to infect others, increasing its numbers within the host.
The findings suggest the potential to develop a therapeutic approach that not only targets the parasite directly with antimalarial drugs but also modifies the environment where the parasite multiplies inside the host’s body.
Dr. Odagawa indicated that these results might pave the way for adjunctive treatments in severe malaria cases by combining body temperature control with conventional drug therapy.
However, he emphasized that the study’s outcomes do not imply that forcibly lowering body temperature can cure malaria. The primary treatment for the disease remains the proper use of antimalarial medications.
He also noted that applying cooling or temperature control techniques in patients requires further animal studies to assess safety factors, followed by extensive clinical trials. Such methods would necessitate close monitoring of body temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration, consciousness level, and vital organ functions.
