Frankfurt’s health authority has advised residents to take mosquito protection measures following two new malaria cases near the airport, bringing the summer’s total to eight infections—including six airport workers and two fatalities.

Frankfurt’s municipal health authority has issued precautionary guidance urging residents to adopt protective measures against mosquitoes after confirming two additional locally acquired malaria cases in the vicinity of Frankfurt Airport. The cases were identified in residents of the Schwanheim district, located adjacent to the airport.
The authority recommends using insect repellents—substances that deter mosquitoes through scent—and wearing clothing that fully covers the body. It also advises installing window screens and other physical barriers indoors to reduce exposure to mosquito bites. Officials emphasized that the risk of malaria transmission among Frankfurt residents remains extremely low, citing Germany’s climatic conditions as unsuitable for sustaining the full life cycle of both the Anopheles mosquito and the Plasmodium parasite responsible for malaria.
The health authority announced the two new infections on Tuesday—the day before yesterday. It suspects the infections originated from a mosquito that arrived at Frankfurt Airport aboard an aircraft. This brings the total number of so-called “airport malaria” cases recorded in the city this summer to eight: six among airport employees and the two newly confirmed cases. Of the six airport workers infected earlier, two died.
Both newly diagnosed patients are currently receiving treatment in hospital. No further personal details or updates on their clinical status have been disclosed. Authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the two cases, including whether they are epidemiologically linked to the six prior airport malaria infections.
In response, the Frankfurt health authority has expanded its mosquito monitoring program to include the Schwanheim district. It has also called on both the public and medical professionals to consider airport malaria as a possible diagnosis when fever, chills, or other compatible symptoms appear—particularly in individuals residing near or frequently visiting the airport area.
