Researchers advocate for a worldwide effort focusing on health prevention from preconception to early childhood to improve lifelong well-being and slow aging.

Scientists are exploring new methods to extend human lifespan with better health by emphasizing prevention and enhancing well-being from the earliest stages of life, potentially even before birth.
In a letter published in the journal Nature Health, an international team of researchers proposed establishing a global alliance named "PROSPER." This initiative aims to study the preconception period and pediatric health to strengthen resilience and health during early life stages.
The researchers argue that addressing aging should not begin only when its effects appear in middle age. Instead, attention should be given to factors influencing human health from the very beginning of development. Parental health, nutrition, sleep, environmental conditions, and early childhood experiences are all elements that may have long-lasting impacts on future health.
They emphasize that the first years of life are not simply a growth phase but a critical period during which the body’s capacity to resist diseases and maintain better health in later years can be established.
The PROSPER project does not currently aim to provide specific treatments but seeks to build a scientific foundation that will support the development of new preventive and health-improving strategies in the future. This includes gathering health data from various countries and creating biobanks to store biological samples. The goal is to identify markers that help understand bodily development and track health changes across different life stages.
Once this research infrastructure is established, the scientists intend to conduct international studies to determine whether improving daily factors—such as child nutrition, sleep quality, microbiome health, and metabolic functions—can influence long-term health trajectories and decelerate biological aging.
The researchers note that implementing this approach requires a significant transformation of the current healthcare system, which often operates through separate specialties like maternal care, pediatrics, and adult medicine, with limited communication between them.
They also point out that existing tools for measuring biological aging were primarily designed for adults and do not fully accommodate the rapid changes occurring during childhood development.
The study highlights that the lack of organized systems to monitor factors affecting aging from early life stages represents a major gap in traditional medicine.
To address this gap, the scientists propose an integrated health plan spanning the entire human lifespan, beginning before conception and continuing through childhood, adolescence, and various later life phases. This plan would incorporate preventive screenings into routine medical visits.
Such a strategy might include encouraging parents to adopt healthy lifestyles before conception, monitoring infant sleep and nutrition, and tracking physical fitness and mental health during adolescence, aiming to build a lasting foundation of health throughout life.
