Environment Minister and Beirut Governor Discuss Waste Crisis with Parliamentary Committee

The Parliamentary Environment Committee held a session today chaired by MP Ghassan Yezbek with the attendance of the members.

The session was attended by Environment Minister Tamara Al-Zein and Beirut Governor Judge Marwan Abboud.

MP Yezbek said after the session: "There is no doubt that there is a waste crisis looming across all of Lebanon, but what necessitated this meeting is the beginning of a waste crisis appearing in Beirut, and this is unacceptable. We invited the Minister of Environment, the Governor of Beirut, representatives of the Minister of Interior, and technical officials in the Beirut Municipality to review this matter and discuss ways to avoid the crisis."

Yezbek added: "We reviewed the scientific and technical treatment method in an executive manner across all of Lebanon, and we touched on Beirut because it is geographically encircled and does not have spaces to have independence in treating its waste, and it is linked to the Jdeideh landfill and the sweeping and collection process that takes place in Beirut for sorting in Karantina."

He continued: "We requested in the Environment Committee and recommended that a quick meeting be held for the Beirut Municipality with the Governor, the Minister of Interior, and technical experts to quickly emerge from the crisis and spare the city of Beirut the issue of waste."
