Reports suggest US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is considering resigning from the Trump administration to prepare for a potential 2028 presidential run, distancing himself from controversial policies.

The British newspaper "The Independent" revealed a state of anticipation in the United States regarding the possible resignation of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
According to the British publication, reports indicate that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is considering resigning from President Donald Trump's administration to pave the way for a White House race in 2028.
In the wake of the Republican Party's losses in the midterm elections, observers believe Rubio may seek to distance himself from the administration's policies, including the war on Iran, to strengthen his position as a potential Republican candidate.
Eyes on 2028?
Sources familiar with the matter indicated that the US Secretary of State, who also serves as National Security Advisor at the White House, is preparing to enter the 2028 Republican nomination race, where Vice President JD Vance is currently his main rival.
Even before the midterm elections, high-level sources within the Republican Party told "The Independent" that Rubio might relinquish his post.
These expectations were reinforced after the midterm election results served as a harsh indictment of the Trump administration, with Democrats successfully capturing Republican strongholds such as Kansas and Texas, according to the newspaper.
The Most Prominent Face of Republicans
Rubio is one of five members of the Trump administration believed to be preparing to "step back" following the Republican defeat.
A source familiar with the situation in Washington told "The Independent" that Rubio must "distance himself from the war in Iran and place the responsibility on Trump."
One of Rubio's allies said: "It makes perfect sense for him to resign and leave the administration. He is currently considered the leading candidate to represent the Republican Party; he clearly outperforms Vance."
He added, "But he cannot run for office while still serving as Secretary of State; remaining tied to this administration would damage his chances."
Vance had quickly blamed the war on Iran following the "disastrous" results, attempting to distance himself from it.
The Vice President said: "The real reason behind our loss is clear to almost everyone... The reason is the war. The President himself pointed to that last night."
He added: "Any honest discussion about our future path must start from this point."
It is believed that Trump may hold War Secretary Pete Hegseth responsible for this policy and the subsequent midterm election losses, and both Rubio and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles may find themselves in the line of fire.
A More Reserved Role
However, the US President expressed support for Hegseth, whom he previously described as one of the strongest supporters of the war. In response to a question about whether he was considering changing him, Trump told reporters, "No, I think he is doing an excellent job."
Meanwhile, government circles noted that Rubio has already begun playing a "more reserved role" regarding the Iran file, despite being the top official for US foreign policy.
In a statement to "The Independent," a senior British government source said, "We are watching what he will do after the midterm elections. It is unlikely he will stay; he is a strong presidential candidate, and we expect him to enter the race."
Mass Departure?
Another Republican source said, "Rubio will leave after the midterm elections. There will be about four or five people who will completely exit the scene."
He added, "Public opinion in the country has turned completely against Trump. People don't even know where Iran is on the map, nor do they understand the justifications for this war."
The source confirmed that "rising fuel prices have caused severe dissatisfaction among people," continuing: "Once Democrats control both the House and Senate, we will see attempts to impeach Trump, and no one wants to remain amidst all this."
Rubio and Trump's relationship has seen increasing convergence, despite their famous clashes during Rubio's first attempt to reach the White House a decade ago.
