US Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday blamed the war with Iran for the Republican Party's defeat in the midterm congressional elections, which resulted in Democratic control of both the House and Senate, according to "AFP".

Vance, whose name is floated as a potential candidate for the 2028 US presidential election, said in a lengthy post on the "X" platform: "The war is the reason we lost," adding: "Everyone knows why we lost, and any honest discussion about the path forward must start here."

The US Vice President added, according to the "Axios" website, that if some believe the war was worth losing Republican control of the Senate for the next six years, they should defend that position, considering it an honest debate about the cost of the war.

Trump had acknowledged in an interview with "Fox News" that the war with Iran contributed to the Republicans' electoral loss, but he stood by his decision to launch military operations, confirming in statements to the "Wall Street Journal" that he made the right decision and would do it again.

Vance's comments come after the Republicans lost control of both chambers of Congress amid voter dissatisfaction with rising living costs and fuel prices, in light of the ongoing fallout from the months-long war with Iran.
