UNIFIL Warns of Approaching End of Mission

Today, Monday, the Head of Mission and Force Commander of UNIFIL, Major General Diodato Abagnara, delivered a briefing to representatives of countries participating in UNIFIL in Beirut regarding the field situation in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL's work under Resolution 1701, and continued support for the Lebanese Army and local communities.

He thanked them for their commitment to stability in the region, stressing the importance of maintaining an international presence to support both parties in fulfilling their obligations under Resolution 1701, and contributing to achieving long-term peace in southern Lebanon, as UNIFIL's mandate approaches its end.

Under pressure from the United States, the UN Security Council decided in August 2025 to set next December as the expiration date for the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which has been deployed since 1978.

UNIFIL currently comprises 7,500 peacekeeping troops from approximately 50 countries, deployed in southern Lebanon along the Blue Line, which stretches 120 kilometers and forms the de facto border between Lebanon and Israel.
