UNIFIL Marks United Nations Day and Reaffirms Commitment to Peace in South Lebanon
UNIFIL commemorated United Nations Day, reaffirming its dedication to peace and stability in southern Lebanon as it approaches the end of its mandate.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) marked United Nations Day, recalling the enduring values upon which the Organization was founded and reaffirming its commitment to achieving peace and stability in southern Lebanon.
In a message issued on the occasion, the Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Diodato Abagnara, emphasized the continued importance of the principles underpinning the United Nations—namely peace, dialogue, and cooperation—stating: "Here in southern Lebanon, we recognize that peace is not guaranteed; it requires trust, determination, and a willingness to work together."
He added: "On this United Nations Day, let us renew our commitment to peace, cooperation, and serving the people for whom we work. Together, we fulfill our mission. Together, we build peace. Together, we shape the future."
UNIFIL personnel, comprising military and civilian members representing nations from around the world, work daily to support the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, maintain stability, and contribute to efforts aimed at helping local communities recover and return to normal life.
This occasion holds particular significance as it will be the last time UNIFIL marks United Nations Day before the mission's mandate concludes at the end of 2026. In tribute to the peacekeepers serving under the United Nations flag, Major General Abagnara praised their dedication to supporting peace and security in southern Lebanon.
As UNIFIL enters the final phase of its presence in southern Lebanon, the mission continues to focus its efforts on supporting stability and preserving the foundations necessary for lasting peace. Reaffirming the mission's commitment, Major General Abagnara stressed that UNIFIL will continue to work hand-in-hand with the Lebanese Armed Forces and local communities until the very last day of its operations.
United Nations Day is celebrated annually on October 24, commemorating the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945. This year's observance comes at a critical juncture, as local communities across southern Lebanon continue to recover from the effects of recent hostilities and strive to rebuild their lives.
