Seven to ten days before the March 2025 Elimination Chamber, WWE executives contacted John Cena with a proposal to abandon his long-standing heroic image. The 17-time world champion accepted the sudden pivot from "good guy" to antagonist, a move that stunned audiences when he attacked Cody Rhodes after winning the men’s match.

Origin of the Villain Persona Shift

Cena detailed the timeline during an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s podcast, Happy Sad Confused. He recalled receiving a call where producers outlined their intention to turn him heel in February. His initial reaction involved disbelief, asking if they were certain, before ultimately agreeing to the creative direction.

This decision marked a departure from previous discussions. Around 2011 or 2012, during his feud with The Rock, Cena had explored a heel turn with Vince McMahon, but the concept was shelved. In this instance, Cena noted he had actively pitched the idea himself the prior year, suggesting a villainous arc for the final portion of his tenure.

Balancing Character and Reality

The wrestler emphasized the distinction between his public persona and private self. He stated, “I would never in real life challenge anyone to a fight. I’m a f**king diplomat. I believe in conversation.” Despite acknowledging that fans might dislike the betrayal, particularly given his friendship with Rhodes, Cena insisted the character’s actions did not reflect his personal values.

Cena requested that WWE cameras capture his facial expressions during the attack on Rhodes to lend authenticity to the moment. He recognized the potential backlash from longtime supporters who viewed him as a hero. However, he framed the risk as necessary, stating, “At least we tried something bold. We went down swinging.” He rejected apathy, choosing instead to commit fully to the narrative change.

Resolution and Face Turn

The storyline evolved following the initial betrayal. WWE introduced characters such as Randy Orton and CM Punk to pressure Cena into returning to his heroic roots. This arc culminated in a face turn ahead of SummerSlam, where Cena faced Cody Rhodes again, integrating the heel run into a broader narrative structure.
