Eugenie’s dual royal ties spark 'double agent' fears
Palace insiders reportedly worry Princess Eugenie cannot maintain close bonds with both the Sussexes and Waleses, urging her to choose a side.

Concerns have emerged within royal circles that Princess Eugenie’s simultaneous closeness to two rival branches of the family could force her into an uncomfortable choice. The daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson maintains strong relationships with both Prince William and Kate Middleton, as well as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. This dual allegiance has led some palace observers to suggest she may be viewed as a "double agent" if she fails to align herself more clearly with one camp over the other.
The pressure to choose sides
A source speaking to Woman’s Day indicated that Eugenie might need to decide whether she is firmly on Meghan Markle’s side. The 36-year-old princess shares good bonds with both the Sussexes and the Waleses. With Harry and Meghan currently in Britain for an extended stay, attention is focused on how these existing connections will evolve during this period.
Despite these expectations, the same source noted that Eugenie and Meghan have not spent much time together recently. While both women are described as extremely busy, there is speculation that the distance may be intentional. Insiders believe Eugenie might be consciously distancing herself from Meghan to manage perceptions within the wider royal family.
Impact of parental controversies
This strategic caution follows significant fallout involving Eugenie’s parents last year. Following large-scale controversy, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson were required to leave the Royal Lodge. Andrew was subsequently stripped of his titles, although Eugenie and her sister, Princess Beatrice, retained their own titles. In light of these events, the consensus among sources is that Eugenie prioritizes maintaining friendly relations with the broader royals.
Spending excessive time with Meghan could negatively impact her standing. Palace insiders feel she “can’t continue to have the best of both worlds.” One insider stated, “If she wants to stay on decent terms with the likes of William and Kate then she can’t be seen as this double agent type of figure.” Consequently, the prevailing view is that she must now pick a side.
