Hannah Waddingham has clarified that she was never involved in the audition process for the role of Madame Morrible in the Wicked movie adaptations.

The Emmy-winning actress, known for her role in Ted Lasso, began her career in musical theatre and has received three Olivier Award nominations for Best Actress in a Musical.

Despite fan speculation during the Wicked casting period, the part of Madame Morrible was ultimately given to Michelle Yeoh.

In an interview with Variety, Waddingham dismissed the rumors and confirmed she never auditioned for the character.

“No, I didn’t! This is the funniest thing. We can put this to bed once and for all,” she said.

Waddingham has maintained a friendship with Cynthia Erivo, who also was linked to the Wicked project, since they worked together on a West End musical in 2015. They discussed the role during casting, but by then Michelle Yeoh had secured it.

“I was like, ‘I think it’s gone.’ She was like, ‘Dude, I think it’s gone as well,'” Waddingham recalled. “I would have loved to have been seen for that, but it was a fait accompli, as they say.”

She expressed interest in starring in a movie musical in the future and hinted at having a project in mind, though she declined to share details. “There is, but I’m keeping it under my hat because I want to do it. Goddamn it!” she remarked.

The next season of Ted Lasso is set to premiere soon, with the trailer already released.
