Is Kim Kardashian’s esophagitis linked to her father’s esophageal cancer death?
Kim Kardashian, 45, revealed she has esophagitis in the newly released trailer for Season 8 of The Kardashians on Hulu, which debuted September 17; her father Robert Kardashian died of esophageal cancer in 2003 at age 59.

The trailer includes a clip in which Kardashian lies in a hospital bed wearing a medical gown. An off-camera voice asks, “Didn’t your father… isn’t it what he died of?” She does not respond verbally in that moment.
Earlier in the same preview, she states directly: “I have something called esophagitis.” The trailer does not specify the severity of her condition or outline treatment details.
Medical context
According to the Mayo Clinic, esophagitis refers to swelling and irritation — or inflammation — of the tissues lining the esophagus, the muscular tube that transports food and drink from the mouth to the stomach.
Diagnosis commonly involves endoscopy, a procedure in which a flexible tube with a camera is inserted through the throat into the esophagus.
Distinction from esophageal cancer
Robert Kardashian, Kim’s father, died of esophageal cancer in 2003 at age 59. Esophagitis and esophageal cancer are medically distinct conditions.
The University of Washington’s Division of Gastroenterology states that chronic esophagitis is “very common,” often linked to acid reflux. It adds that approximately one in 10 patients with reflux may develop Barrett’s esophagus — a condition in which the normal esophageal lining is replaced by tissue more susceptible to cancer.
Season premiere date
The eighth season of The Kardashians will premiere on Hulu on October 8.
