Meghan McCain Shares Tribute Following Brother Doug's Sudden Death

On May 20, Doug McCain, the eldest son of the late Senator John McCain and brother of former The View co-host Meghan McCain, passed away unexpectedly. Meghan honored her brother's memory on Instagram, describing him as a "truly wonderful, joyful man."

In her Instagram post, Meghan McCain shared a photo featuring her brother alongside their father. She wrote, “I am deeply saddened to share the news of my brother Doug McCain’s sudden passing. He was a truly wonderful, joyful man who supported me throughout my life. He brought humor, fun and great conversation to every room. I will cherish our memories together.” She extended prayers to Douglas’ wife, Ashley, and their children, Caroline and Shepp. The cause of Doug’s death was not disclosed.

Supporters and followers responded with condolences in the comments. One expressed, “Your whole family serves our nation honorably. May you all receive kind support and understanding.” Another commented, “Doug was one of a kind, always looking out for his crews and taking care of us in-flight and on layovers away from our loved ones. He will be missed.”

According to an online obituary, Doug McCain was 66 years old and grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. He earned a degree in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia. Following in his father’s footsteps, Doug served as a Navy pilot, flying A-6 Intruders for six years before embarking on a lengthy career with American Airlines.

The obituary described Doug as “a loyal friend to many and cherished each and every friendship. He was a devoted son, a loving father to Caroline and Shepp, and most recently found great joy in being Teddy’s grandfather. Doug will be remembered for his generous heart, his loyal friendships, and his unwavering love for his family. He will be dearly missed by those close to him.”

The McCain Institute, a nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C., established after Senator McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, stated, “Doug will be remembered as a patriot and friend to the many alumni of Sen. McCain’s Institute, campaigns & Senate staff.”
