Four iconic garments worn by Michael Jackson during his career-defining 1983 performances are returning to the auction market. Julien’s Auctions confirmed on October 7 that these items, unseen at sale for nearly twenty years, will be offered in a dedicated event.

Auction Details and Venue

The "Michael Jackson: The Fashion Legacy Auction" is scheduled for December 7 through December 9. Bidding will take place at the Rosewood Abu Dhabi. The collection includes memorabilia from both the "Thriller" music video and the Motown 25 television special.

The Signature Thriller Attire

Central to the sale is the red-and-black leather jacket Jackson wore in the 1983 "Thriller" video. Collectors may also bid on the black shoes featured in that production. Martin Nolan, co-founder and executive director of Julien’s Auctions, noted the global fascination with the jacket. “The Thriller jacket is the one the world has never stopped talking about,” Nolan said.

Motown 25 Performance Items

Two additional pieces originate from Jackson’s performance of “Billie Jean” during the "Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever" broadcast. This set includes the rhinestone-covered glove he wore when debuting the moonwalk, along with the loafers used onstage that night. As per PEOPLE, these items highlight a pivotal moment in pop culture history.

Historical Auction Records

Julien’s Auctions previously managed sales for these specific artifacts. The house established a world record price for the Thriller jacket in 2011. A separate world record was set for the Motown 25 glove in 2009. These past transactions underscore the high value collectors place on Jackson’s wardrobe staples.

Pre-Sale Exhibition Plans

Before the December bidding opens, Prince Jackson’s Heal Los Angeles Foundation intends to showcase the memorabilia. The display will occur during the foundation’s annual “This Is Thriller” event. The Palace Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles serves as the host venue for this exhibition. The historic theater also provided filming locations for portions of the original "Thriller" music video.
