Gavin Newsom delivered a concise two-word verdict on the departure of his former spouse, Kimberly Guilfoyle, from her role as U.S. ambassador to Greece. The California governor’s measured comment came as scrutiny intensified over allegations against the diplomat.

Newsom’s Brief Response to Resignation

During a Saturday campaign stop in New Hampshire, where he was rallying support for Democratic candidates, reporters pressed Newsom on the controversy engulfing Guilfoyle. He kept his remarks short, stating simply, “It’s unfortunate.”

In an interview with CBS News, the governor clarified that he had not communicated with Guilfoyle recently. While he declined to provide further details, he expressed hope that matters would resolve favorably for her.

Allegations and Official Departure

Guilfoyle’s resignation followed reports by The Wall Street Journal alleging misconduct and improper use of funds. Subsequently, the Donald Trump administration requested she step down from her diplomatic post in Greece. She submitted her resignation letter on October 13 but has firmly rejected the accusations leveled against her.

Taking to X, Guilfoyle vowed to “vigorously defend” her reputation, character, and integrity. She emphasized her long history of professional service, arguing that false accusations should not eclipse her decades in public life. “I have dedicated my professional life to fighting for justice, standing up for what is right, and defending the values that make America exceptional,” she wrote.

Trump Administration’s Stance

Former President Donald Trump acknowledged that officials “didn’t like what we were reading” about Guilfoyle, though he noted she had been “doing a good job.” When asked about her previous engagement to Donald Trump Jr., Trump stated she “wasn’t a member of my family,” according to HuffPost.

Past Personal Connection

Before her association with the Trump family, Guilfoyle shared a personal history with Newsom. The two met at a Democratic fundraising event in San Francisco in 1994, beginning a romantic relationship a year later. They married in 2001 and divorced five years afterward.
