A man died after jumping a fence at Denver International Airport and being struck by a departing Frontier Airlines flight.
A fatal incident at Denver International Airport late Friday evening left one person dead after they were struck by a departing Frontier Airlines passenger jet. The aircraft, an Airbus A321 carrying 224 passengers and seven crew members, was en route to Los Angeles when the collision occurred on the runway, according to a statement from the airport on Saturday.
The individual, whose identity has not been released, had scaled the airport's perimeter fence. Just two minutes later, while crossing the runway, he was hit by the accelerating plane. The airport's statement indicated the person is not believed to have been an employee.
The collision triggered a brief engine fire and filled the aircraft's cabin with smoke. All passengers and crew were safely evacuated from the plane. The flight was subsequently canceled.
Twelve people sustained minor injuries, with five of them transported to local hospitals for treatment. Frontier Airlines confirmed it is investigating the event and gathering further details in coordination with the airport and other safety authorities.
