After 6 days of a failed execution attempt, American Christa Pike regained consciousness and became able to speak.

The 50-year-old woman survived two execution attempts by lethal injection on Wednesday evening inside a prison in Tennessee state, after receiving two fatal doses of pentobarbital, a powerful substance from the barbiturate class.

In a new statement, Pike's lawyers said: "Contrary to all expectations, Christa Pike is conscious, able to speak, and continues to receive vital medical care."

Pike, who was supposed to be the first woman executed in Tennessee state in more than 200 years, had been in critical condition since the execution attempt, connected to a ventilator, according to limited information provided by her lawyers.

Lawyers were not allowed to visit her in the hospital before revealing on Tuesday that her condition had improved, she had regained consciousness, and could speak.

30 years in solitary confinement

Behind the execution attempt lies a story that began decades ago, when Pike was sentenced to death for her role in killing Colleen Slemmer, aged 19, in 1995, when Pike was eighteen years old.

After nearly three decades in prison, Pike spent approximately 30 years in solitary confinement within the "death row," according to her lawyer.

Her legal team is demanding that the governor of Tennessee state commute her sentence to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

The lawyers base their demand on what they described as horrific forms of violence Pike suffered since childhood, particularly sexual violence.

Execution attempt reopens debate

The execution attempt on Wednesday evening was not merely an unprecedented medical incident for Pike, but also reopened the discussion in the United States regarding the death penalty and its implementation mechanisms.

Following the failure of the procedure, Tennessee state Governor Bill Lee ordered on Thursday a suspension of executions in the state, along with launching an independent investigation to determine the reasons for the failed execution.

In another step following the incident, Lee announced on Saturday the acceptance of the resignation of the director of the Tennessee Department of Correction.

While Pike continues to receive medical care, her criminal and legal file awaits the outcome of investigations, at a time when her lawyers are demanding the conversion of the death sentence to life imprisonment.
