Christa Pike returns to prison after surviving lethal injection
Attorneys confirm Christa Pike has been discharged from the hospital and returned to Tennessee's women's prison following a failed execution attempt.

Christa Pike has returned to incarceration following her discharge from a medical facility, according to statements issued by her legal team on Saturday. The 50-year-old inmate had remained hospitalized since state authorities attempted to carry out her death sentence via lethal injection in late September.
Return to Deborah K. Johnson Center
Pike was transferred back to the Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, the correctional facility where she has served time for three decades. Her attorneys confirmed in a written release that she continues to receive necessary medical attention within the prison walls.
The legal representatives noted that Pike expressed gratitude toward the first responders and medical staff who attended to her during the extraordinary circumstances of the failed procedure. They added that the team remains committed to monitoring her ongoing recovery progress.
Details of the Sept. 30 Attempt
The execution attempt took place on Sept. 30, targeting Pike for the 1995 murder of classmate Colleen Slemmer. State officials administered two doses of pentobarbital, yet Pike survived the process. This outcome marks the first instance recorded by the Death Penalty Information Center of an individual surviving lethal injection drugs during an execution.
During the procedure, Pike initially indicated she was at peace when asked for final words. Approximately five minutes later, she lifted her head and reported pain in her arm. Although she appeared to lose consciousness, witnesses heard heavy breathing until media observers were removed from the room nearly 90 minutes into the event. An ambulance subsequently transported her to a hospital.
Investigation Into IV Line Issues
Medical experts and lethal injection specialists are examining whether complications with the intravenous line caused the drug to accumulate in tissue rather than entering the bloodstream. A court filing by Pike’s attorneys stated that no member of the execution team realized the IV lines were incorrectly placed at any point.
The Tennessee Department of Correction has not publicly explained what specific errors occurred during the botched procedure. However, the incident triggered immediate political and administrative responses across the state.
State Response and Resignations
Governor Bill Lee postponed the only other scheduled execution in Tennessee for this year and ordered a comprehensive review of the failure. Additionally, the head of the state’s prison system resigned following the unsuccessful attempt.
At one stage during her hospitalization, Pike required ventilator support, leading her attorneys to doubt her survival prospects. Contrary to those fears, she regained consciousness and began speaking and walking with assistance before her eventual discharge.
