Bangkok declared disaster zone after severe flooding

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt announced on Saturday that the Thai capital has been designated a disaster-affected area due to flooding. The declaration follows continuous heavy rainfall that submerged numerous roads and hindered resident movement, with forecasts indicating rain will persist through the weekend.

Scope of emergency declaration

The official status now encompasses all 50 districts of Bangkok. This represents an expansion from the initial announcement by authorities, which had only classified three areas as disaster zones. The broader designation enables government and local agencies to accelerate relief operations and provide assistance to affected residents.

Meteorological data indicates that the capital experienced uninterrupted rain for more than 24 hours. In certain locations, precipitation levels exceeded 150 millimeters. Local records show that cumulative rainfall since the onset of the weather event approached 300 millimeters in some sites.

Weather patterns and warnings

Governor Chadchart warned of the severity of the situation for the population, noting potential damage to both public and private property. The Thai Meteorological Department issued alerts predicting continued heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms into early next week, affecting Bangkok and other regions across the country.

The department attributed the atmospheric conditions to a strong low-pressure system impacting central Thailand, Bangkok, and surrounding areas. This system coincided with intensified southwest monsoon winds. Authorities have advised residents living near canals and in low-lying zones to relocate their belongings to higher ground in anticipation of rising water levels.

Emergency response measures

The Bangkok administration has initiated emergency protocols to manage the flooding. These measures include preparing city schools to serve as temporary shelters, prioritizing bedridden patients and groups most in need of support. Simultaneously, officials are working to expedite water drainage and installing barriers and sandbags in vulnerable areas.
