A 34-year-old judge in Brazil died after complications from an egg retrieval procedure, prompting a police investigation into possible medical error.

A police investigation is underway in Brazil after a 34-year-old judge died following complications from an egg retrieval procedure at a fertility clinic. Mariana Francisco Ferreira underwent the procedure for in vitro fertilization on Monday, May 4, at the Invitro Assisted Reproduction clinic.
After being discharged around 9 a.m., Ferreira returned home but soon experienced severe pain and an intense feeling of cold. As her condition deteriorated, her mother took her back to the clinic at approximately 11 a.m. Initially believing she had urinated on herself, medical staff determined she was actually experiencing vaginal bleeding. She received treatment, including stitches to control the bleeding.
Ferreira was then transferred to a hospital, admitted at 5 p.m., and taken directly to the intensive care unit. Despite undergoing surgery at 9 p.m. the following day, May 5, her condition worsened. Resuscitation attempts failed, and she was pronounced dead at 6:03 a.m. in Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil.
The clinic released a statement saying: “From the first signs of complications, the entire medical and care team immediately followed appropriate clinical protocols and took all necessary measures, providing emergency care within the clinic and arranging for the patient’s transfer to a suitable hospital for continued specialist treatment, always with our team and the doctor responsible for the procedure accompanying her.”

Originally from Niterói, Ferreira had dreamed of becoming a judge since her teenage years. She began preparing for the profession in 2018, five years before taking the exam. She joined the judiciary of Rio Grande do Sul in December 2023 and served in several courts, most recently at the Criminal Court of Sapiranga since February.
Daniel Neves Pereira, president of the Association of Judges of Rio Grande do Sul, described her as “a much-loved colleague, full of life and enthusiasm for the judiciary.” One of her assistants, Maurício Silva Colferai, told local media: “She was working on Sunday night, until 10pm, dealing with case files.”
Colferai added: “Mariana was an incredible person and deserves all possible tributes. It’s no surprise that her three assistants rushed from Rio Grande do Sul to Mogi das Cruzes for the farewell. She was more than a boss – she was a friend. She had a beautiful life story of overcoming adversity. We used to call our team ‘the assistants of the best judge in the world’.”
Ferreira will be laid to rest in Mogi das Cruzes on Thursday, May 8.
