Fugitive Anesthesiologist Caught After 20 Years Hiding at Sea

Ronald Fisher, a former American anesthesiologist, spent more than 20 years evading capture by living on a sailboat near the coasts of New York and New Jersey under multiple aliases. Despite the vastness of open waters and the extensive New York coastline, Fisher remained on the run from a court order accusing him of sexual assault.

The end of his prolonged escape came with a swift security raid that concluded his two-decade disappearance. The investigation, led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, revealed details of the 70-year-old suspect’s covert lifestyle during his years in hiding.

Fisher resided aboard a large 56-foot sailboat, navigating waters close to New York and New Jersey while using the alias "Richard Graydon" among several false identities. He employed advanced technological tools to encrypt his internet protocol (IP) addresses, effectively avoiding any digital traces that could reveal his location.

During the search of his floating residence, authorities discovered manuals and specialized references detailing methods to evade law enforcement and security patrols, demonstrating that his escape was meticulously planned and professionally executed.

The case that triggered the manhunt dates back to 2003, when a woman named Cheryl Gingerich, then 46 years old, accused Fisher of a brutal sexual assault aboard a yacht he owned and which was docked at a marina in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The two had met through the internet.

In 2005, while his trial was ongoing, Fisher unexpectedly fled, leaving behind an email to his attorney titled "Goodbye." In the message, he stated his decision to leave the United States entirely to start a "new life" and avoid the possibility of conviction. Subsequently, the court convicted him in absentia of first-degree sexual assault, and his name was added to the "America's Most Wanted" list of the most dangerous fugitives.

Despite his extensive sailing skills and wide network, recent intelligence breakthroughs enabled law enforcement to penetrate his long-standing concealment. As a result, Rhode Island’s Violent Fugitive Task Force, in cooperation with the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, and Coast Guard, executed a coordinated operation to surround and raid the sailboat at sea.

Following his arrest and transfer for interrogation, biometric fingerprint analysis confirmed without doubt that the 70-year-old detainee is the fugitive anesthesiologist who had been on the run for two decades, finally facing the consequences he had tried to escape in the depths of the ocean.
