Man arrested after mom of two found at base of Alderney cliffs

A 44-year-old man has been taken into custody on suspicion of murder following the recovery of a woman’s body from the sea near the Channel Islands. The victim was identified as Hannah Benfield, a 34-year-old mother of two whose remains were discovered in the early hours of Monday, Sept. 28, off the coast of Alderney.

Discovery and arrest details

Guernsey Police confirmed that Benfield’s body was located at the foot of cliffs known locally as The Guns. The discovery followed a search-and-rescue operation launched after officers received an initial report of an incident on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 11:04 p.m. local time. Volunteers from Channel Islands Air Search spotted the body around 4:28 a.m. the next morning.

Emergency services, including the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the French Coastguard, participated in the rescue efforts, but Benfield was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect arrested in connection with the death had initially received hospital treatment before being transferred to police custody.

Community reaction and investigation

Authorities stated they are not seeking additional suspects and believe there is no ongoing risk to the public. Specialist family liaison officers are currently supporting Benfield’s relatives, who have requested privacy during this difficult period. Mother Samantha Martell, a local priest, told the BBC that the event had “shaken” the island’s population of just over 2,000 residents. She urged locals to come together and look out for one another. Stephen Bacon, a teacher at The Guernsey Institute, also paid tribute to Benfield on Facebook, describing her as a “lovely-natured young lady” who left a “very fond impression” on her educators.
