On Wednesday, 20 May, Sergei Kornilov lost control of a Mercedes convertible while driving under the influence, resulting in a multi-vehicle accident in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. The 21-year-old veered into the opposite lane, colliding with a Kia which was then pushed into a Nissan before he struck the curb.

None of the drivers were injured, although all three cars sustained damage. Kornilov is the son of a local billionaire businessman who led the automotive company Luidor until his death in 2024.

Shortly before the crash, Kornilov posted a video of himself driving the yellow Mercedes convertible while apparently intoxicated. After the accident, he was seen posing for a photo on the hood of the damaged vehicle.

He then proceeded to a restaurant where he continued drinking and live-streamed the evening on social media, making the statement: “Rich kids don’t die.” He also responded to critics by saying, “Poverty is just jealous.”

Authorities issued four administrative reports against Kornilov that day for refusing a breath test, committing traffic violations, lacking insurance, and damaging road infrastructure. Reports indicate he has accumulated 161 administrative offenses since 2025, including numerous failures to pay fines or comply with penalties.

A criminal investigation has been launched, and the Mercedes convertible was confiscated as evidence. Local sources report that Kornilov could face up to two years in prison if convicted of driving under the influence.

Following public criticism online, Kornilov issued an apology as reported by creatorzine.com. He stated, “Not long ago, I crashed while under the influence of alcohol, and afterwards I made some unflattering comments about it. I’m now in a rehab centre for alcohol addiction due to prolonged drinking. Everything I said about the crash wasn’t true and doesn’t reflect how I actually feel – it was all said under the influence of alcohol. I sincerely regret what I did and I apologise once again.”

Investigators are reportedly seeking a court order to place Kornilov under house arrest.
