Swedish police have arrested a suspect after a sword attack injured several people at Brännkyrkaskolan high school in the town of Vägersta, located northwest of Stockholm.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated in a text message broadcast by Swedish television that “the motives behind this incident remain unknown at this time, but we are fully confident that the police are conducting intensive investigations to uncover all aspects of the event.”
Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer confirmed on Swedish television that “police are present at the scene and working intensively to bring the situation under control,” adding that “the government is in constant contact with security agencies and monitoring developments minute by minute.”
Magnus Andersson, leader of the Social Democrats, expressed deep shock, writing on X: “Disturbing news from Vägersta… Our hearts are with the injured.” She emphasized that “the entire country stands in solidarity with the town during this difficult moment.”
Emergency services received notification of the incident at approximately 12:00 GMT, prompting authorities to immediately evacuate nearby schools as a precautionary measure.
Local media published footage showing multiple ambulances and a police helicopter arriving at the site to administer medical aid and secure the area.
