German authorities launched aerial searches with thermal cameras near Munich airport after a hunter spotted an animal suspected to be a puma.

Rural areas surrounding Munich Airport in Germany have become the site of an extensive security operation following sightings of a mysterious animal suspected to be a puma. Police mobilized helicopters and drones equipped with thermal imaging technology to locate the creature, though efforts so far have failed to confirm its identity or find physical evidence.
Search operations expanded into the Notzingermoos region near Oberding in Bavaria. Authorities utilized aerial thermal scanning to survey the terrain after ground patrols ceased due to darkness. Despite these technological measures, no new proof confirming the presence of a predator has emerged.
The situation grew more complex when a helicopter was dispatched to investigate an animal captured on surveillance footage by a security company employee. The subject appeared unusual on camera, but initial assessments suggested it was not a large feline and might simply be a domestic cat.
The incident began on Tuesday evening when a hunter used night-vision equipment to spot and record the unknown animal. An expert reviewing the footage indicated the creature could be a puma. However, local authorities in the Erding district stated that the identification remains unresolved and images are still undergoing analysis.
Officials have found no indicators pointing to a circus or a facility for keeping predatory animals in the vicinity from which the creature may have escaped. Consequently, the source and reasons for the animal's appearance remain unknown.
As the search continues, authorities urged residents to exercise caution and immediately report any potential sightings or information that could help pinpoint the animal's location. Dog owners were advised against letting their pets roam freely, while parents were instructed to closely supervise young children and prevent them from playing unsupervised.
Despite the heightened alert status, the hypothesis of a free-roaming puma remains unconfirmed. Officials continue to handle reports with care until definitive evidence reveals the true nature of the animal.
This is not the first instance where an unidentified animal sighting triggers widespread search operations in Germany. In 2023, police and hunters spent approximately 30 hours combing the Kleinmachnow area near Berlin following reports of a lioness. Subsequent investigations revealed the animal was likely nothing more than a domestic cat.
A similar event occurred in 2025 near Lake Geiseltal in Saxony-Anhalt. Reports of a possible puma led to confusion, but experts later concluded the animal was probably a house cat, reigniting debates about the reliability of such sightings.
