A family in India set fire to what they believed was their missing son's corpse, only to discover a month later that he was alive and imprisoned.

According to the Mirror, on August 5, 2026, a man named Ravi Kumar disappeared from his home, prompting his family to report his disappearance to the police. A few days later, a body was found in a marshy area.

Due to the advanced state of decomposition, identifying the body was difficult, leading Kumar’s relatives to believe it was him. A funeral ceremony was held in the city of Kapurthala before the remains were cremated.

But on September 2, Ravi’s family received a surprise phone call from the Central Jail in Kapurthala, informing them that Kumar had been there since the day he went missing.

The family rushed to the jail, where they confirmed the prisoner was indeed their son. The man said he had been detained on August 5 on charges of disturbing public order and transferred to jail the same day.

According to police, the man was arrested under legal provisions allowing release on bail. Authorities now need to identify the body that was cremated, but DNA analysis of the remains is no longer possible due to high temperatures destroying the genetic material entirely.
