Two individuals lost their lives and another sustained injuries following the collapse of a fairy chimney at the entrance to the Göreme Open-Air Museum in Nevşehir. The incident occurred on October 29, 2026, when the rock formation gave way for reasons that have not yet been determined.

Casualties Confirmed by Provincial Governor

Nevşehir Governor Hüseyin Kök confirmed the fatalities in an official statement, noting that the bodies of two victims were recovered from beneath the fallen debris. He reported that one injured person was transported to a hospital for immediate medical intervention.

Governor Kök attributed the disaster to a landslide that resulted in the falling of the rock mass. "We reached the funerals of two people due to the rock fall caused by the soil slide," he stated. "We sent one injured person to the hospital. His intervention is being carried out. Search and rescue work is being conducted at the scene."

Initial Visuals Show Victim Under Debris

Footage emerging from the site shortly after the collapse revealed a person trapped underneath the massive stone fragment. A dense cloud of dust enveloped the surrounding area as the structure failed, obscuring visibility during the initial moments of the event.

Emergency response units, including health services and search and rescue teams, were dispatched to the location immediately following the report of the incident. Operations continued at the scene to secure the area and assist those affected by the structural failure.
