Two hikers survived a 330ft fall down a cliff in Romania, sustaining minor injuries and receiving rescue by mountain teams and helicopter support.
Two hikers survived a 330ft fall down a cliff face in Romania, escaping with only minor injuries. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon (24 May) on Brâna Mare, part of the Caraiman massif.
The individuals, a 57-year-old man and woman from Bucharest, slipped and tumbled down the cliff. Mountain rescue teams from Salvamont Prahova responded to an emergency call at approximately 12:45 local time.
Due to the remote location, rescuers requested helicopter assistance from the IGAv air unit based in Brașov. The operation was described as complex, with rescuers commending the hikers’ survival instincts.
The woman sustained minor injuries that did not require hospital treatment, while the man was diagnosed with shoulder, chest, and abdominal injuries. He was airlifted by helicopter to the County Emergency Hospital in Brașov for further care.
A spokesperson for Salvamont Prahova stated, “They were very lucky. The female person had only minor traumas that do not require hospital treatment while the male was diagnosed with scapulo-humeral trauma and thoraco-abdominal trauma.”
The rescue team expressed gratitude towards the helicopter crew for their excellent collaboration in safely completing the mission.
This rescue took place on one of the exposed ridges in Romania’s Bucegi Mountains, a region known for its popularity among hikers but also recognized for its hazards. No additional information has been released regarding how the hikers lost their footing.
Mountain rescue services continue to caution visitors about the dangers posed by unstable terrain and remaining snow on high-altitude trails.
