US Supreme Court Blocks Lawsuit Over Rastafarian Prisoner's Braids Cut

The United States Supreme Court has decided against permitting a former Louisiana prisoner to file a lawsuit against prison officials who cut his braids, an act that violated his Rastafarian religious beliefs.

Although the justices condemned the treatment endured by the inmate, Damon Landor, they ruled that the federal law designed to protect prisoners' religious rights does not allow for legal claims seeking compensation even when those rights are infringed.

The Supreme Court aligned with lower courts in determining that the existing law cannot be used to impose financial liability on individuals who violate prisoners' rights.

Rastafarianism is a religious and social movement that originated in Jamaica during the 1930s. It is internationally recognized for its distinctive braided hairstyle known as "Rasta."
