Quick Healthy Lunch to Lower Cholesterol Levels
A walnut and cheese sandwich on wholemeal bread is recommended by Heart UK as a cholesterol-lowering lunch option.

For those diagnosed with high cholesterol, dietary adjustments are critical without sacrificing flavor or enjoyment. This condition, marked by fat buildup in blood vessels, elevates the risk of heart attacks and strokes—a blocked artery to the brain can trigger a stroke, while one feeding the heart muscle may cause a heart attack.
Once cholesterol reaches borderline or high levels, lifestyle and dietary changes become essential to prevent potentially life-threatening complications. The charity Heart UK, as reported by Surrey Live, has proposed a specific lunch model that can aid in lowering cholesterol: a cheese and walnut sandwich.
The Recommended Sandwich Recipe
The meal consists of two slices of wholemeal or wholegrain bread, 30 grams of low-fat spreadable cheese (such as Philadelphia), three finely chopped walnuts, a quarter stick of celery diced into small cubes, and black pepper to taste.
The UK's National Health Service (NHS) notes that simple dietary tweaks can produce a noticeable difference in cholesterol levels, particularly by cutting saturated fats and replacing them with unsaturated fats. Foods to avoid include meat pies, sausages, fatty meats, butter, lard, full-fat cheese, hard cheeses like cheddar, cakes, biscuits, and items containing coconut or palm oil.
Recommended Foods and Lifestyle
Conversely, doctors advise increasing intake of oily fish such as salmon and mackerel, healthy oils like olive and rapeseed oil, whole grains including brown rice, wholemeal bread, and whole-wheat pasta, as well as nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables.
Medical professionals also stress the importance of a healthy lifestyle, which includes quitting smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, and undergoing regular cholesterol checks. Physical activity is a cornerstone of cholesterol reduction, with a recommendation of at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise, such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming.
