A number of Sunni deputies held an extensive and emergency meeting, during which the latest developments related to the general amnesty file were discussed, in light of ongoing contacts and meetings with the President of the Republic, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Prime Minister, along with various political forces and references, with the aim of securing the necessary national and political climate to reach a fair and balanced formula for this national and humanitarian file.
The attendees affirmed that the general amnesty file is a national and humanitarian file par excellence, which would lift injustice from broad segments of the Lebanese people across its various categories, and has reached an advanced stage of discussion within the joint committees, after achieving tangible progress in bringing viewpoints closer on a large number of basic items, which requires dealing with the current phase with the highest levels of national and political responsibility, away from any steps or approaches that would slow down the path or obstruct reaching the desired outcome.
The attending deputies stressed that their position is unified and firm, based on supporting any serious endeavor that leads to the enactment of a fair and balanced general amnesty, which addresses existing cases of injustice, while preserving stability and the prestige of the state and its institutions, stemming from a firm conviction that this file can no longer tolerate further delay or political stagnation.
The attendees also affirmed that all ongoing political meetings and consultations should constitute an element of support and completion for the work path of the joint committees, not an alternative to it, considering that the natural place for resolving this file remains within the constitutional institutions and the Parliament.
Accordingly, the attendees called for holding an emergency meeting and opening the sessions of the joint committees within a period not exceeding one week, to complete the discussion and final decision on all items of the proposed general amnesty law, in preparation for referring it to the general assembly for discussion and approval according to constitutional procedures, in order to achieve the supreme national interest and consolidate the logic of the state, dialogue, and national partnership, and to affirm everyone's keenness to address this file in a spirit of justice and fairness away from any political or factional considerations.
