Chinese robotics firm Unitree unveils the GD01, a 2.7-meter-tall, 500-kg manned mecha that can transform from bipedal to quadrupedal mode, priced at $650,000.

For $650,000, sci-fi fans can now get closer than ever to piloting their own Gundam-style mobile suit. Chinese robotics company Unitree has unveiled the GD01, a manned mecha it claims is the world's first such vehicle ready for mass production. The announcement, made earlier this week, has stunned observers who had previously watched the firm's humanoid robots perform acrobatics and combat sports.
The roughly 2.7-meter-tall machine weighs about 500 kilograms, including the human operator. At the touch of a button, it can seamlessly shift from walking on two legs to moving on all fours. A video that has gone viral on Chinese social media shows Unitree CEO Wang Xingxing climbing into the driver's seat, maneuvering the mecha, and smashing through walls.
Unitree is marketing the GD01 as the first manned mecha ready for series production, with a starting price of 3.9 million yuan ($650,000). Critics have called the price tag prohibitive for most enthusiasts. In response, company representatives have stated that Unitree is still working on optimizing production and lowering costs to make the mecha more affordable.
Though an official launch date has not been announced, the GD01 has already generated significant global attention. Many have expressed excitement about owning and operating their own mechanized suit, while others have raised practical concerns. These include difficulties getting in and out of the mecha, as well as questions about its battery life.
