Bluesky’s Monthly Active Users Fall 52% from Q4 2024 Peak
Bluesky’s monthly active users dropped to 10.7 million in Q2 2026—down 52% from 22.1 million in Q4 2024—while daily active users fell 25.6% year-on-year to 3 million in July 2026, per Similarweb data.

Bluesky’s monthly active users on mobile declined to 10.7 million in the second quarter of 2026, a 52% drop from the platform’s peak of 22.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2024, according to Similarweb. The analytics firm reported that Bluesky’s monthly active users stood at 10.4 million globally in June 2026—a 27.2% year-on-year decrease. Daily active users on mobile fell further, slipping 25.6% year-on-year to approximately 3 million in July 2026.
What the user metrics reveal
The figures indicate Bluesky continues to add new registered accounts but is losing regular engagement. A significant portion of users who joined the decentralized social platform in protest against X following the November 2024 U.S. elections did not remain long-term. More critically, the platform has lost over half its average monthly active users since its late-2024 high point. While total registered accounts now number around 46 million, Bluesky does not regularly disclose official daily or monthly active user counts—making third-party analytics like Similarweb essential for assessing real-world usage.
AT Protocol as strategic pivot
Despite declining usage metrics, engagement intensity among remaining users appears stable: the daily active user to monthly active user ratio reached 29% in June 2026—a figure comparable to Meta’s Threads. For Bluesky’s new CEO Tony Schneider, the company’s priorities extend beyond growing the standalone Bluesky app. Its core objective is advancing the AT Protocol, an open technical foundation designed to power multiple interoperable applications, services, and communities. Early implementations include BlackSky and Eurosky. Video-focused app Skylight—built on the AT Protocol—has also attracted initial user interest as part of this broader ecosystem strategy.
New product development
In parallel with protocol expansion, Bluesky launched AI-powered research tool Attie. The company is also integrating private data handling capabilities into the Bluesky application. This functionality may appeal to users less invested in open, public social networking and more drawn to private networks and closed communities—potentially expanding Bluesky’s addressable audience beyond its original decentralization-focused base.
Where did Bluesky’s users go?
Similarweb data shows no evidence that departing Bluesky users migrated back to X. X’s monthly active users on mobile declined only 3% year-on-year to 302 million in June 2026. Its daily active users fell 7% year-on-year to 123.7 million in July 2026. Meanwhile, web traffic to X.com rose 5.3% year-on-year in July, reaching roughly 4.7 billion visits.
Threads gains momentum
Meta’s Threads emerges as the strongest beneficiary of Bluesky’s slowdown—though it remains unclear whether Threads is directly capturing former Bluesky users or simply attracting a new cohort unfamiliar with Twitter-like platforms. Threads’ daily active users surged 21.3% year-on-year to 147 million in July 2026. Website visits jumped 112% year-on-year to approximately 471.6 million during the same month.
