Epic Games Confirms Rocket League as First Unreal Engine 6 Title
Epic Games confirmed Rocket League will be the first title to transition from Unreal Engine 3 to Unreal Engine 6, aiming to preserve its core physics.

Epic Games announced at the RLCS Paris Major 2026 that Rocket League will be the inaugural game to adopt Unreal Engine 6, bypassing Unreal Engine 5 entirely. The car-soccer title, which has operated on Unreal Engine 3 since its 2015 release, will undergo a generational upgrade with this move.
Despite the announcement, Epic has not provided a release timeline for the Unreal Engine 6 version of Rocket League, causing concern among the competitive player base. The game's physics, which are central to its gameplay and competitive integrity, are promised to remain unchanged, with only visual and presentation elements receiving enhancements.
Rocket League’s Engine History and Upgrade Path
Since its launch, Rocket League has consistently used Unreal Engine 3. Although Epic discussed transitioning the game to Unreal Engine 5 in 2021, that update never materialized. Instead, the game will leapfrog directly to Unreal Engine 6. Epic views Rocket League’s relatively straightforward architecture as an ideal testbed for the new engine before applying it to more complex projects like Fortnite.
The commitment to preserving the game's physics is significant for the community, where player muscle memory is critical. Past engine migrations in franchises such as Halo and Gears have altered gameplay feel in ways that affected competitive play, underscoring the importance of this promise.
Challenges with Unreal Engine 5 and Unreal Engine 6 Improvements
Unreal Engine 5 has faced criticism for issues including stuttering, shader compilation delays, and inconsistent frame rates on consoles. Epic has identified these problems as priorities to address in Unreal Engine 6, which is designed with improved multithreading and optimization to enhance performance.

These improvements are particularly relevant for games like Rocket League that demand high refresh rates for competitive play. Unreal Engine 6 is also attracting interest from other major studios, such as CD Projekt, signaling broader adoption within the AAA gaming sector.
Release Timeline and Competitive Implications
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has indicated that preview builds of Unreal Engine 6 are expected in approximately two to three years, placing the Rocket League port’s release no earlier than late 2027, assuming development proceeds as planned. This timeline applies to all platforms including PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
Esports organizations with vested interests in maintaining competitive stability, such as FaZe, G2, and Cloud9, will be closely monitoring whether Epic’s assurance regarding the preservation of Rocket League’s physics holds true once the new engine version is launched.
