Google offers a simpler Gallery app alongside Photos, differing primarily in cloud backup capabilities and editing depth.

Users seeking a basic image organizer without the complexity of Google Photos can turn to the company’s dedicated Gallery application. This stripped-down tool allows for simple organization but lacks the automatic cloud synchronization found in its more robust counterpart. Unlike preloaded apps from manufacturers such as Samsung, this Gallery is developed directly by Google and serves those who do not require extensive feature sets.
The primary distinction lies in data management. Google Photos supports automatic cloud backups, a feature absent in the Gallery app. To enable this in Photos, users must tap their avatar in the top-right corner and select Backup to toggle the setting. Storage allowances vary by account age; older personal accounts retain 15GB of free space, while new accounts created on or after March 9, 2026, start with 5GB. These newer users can unlock an additional 10GB by verifying a valid phone number.
This quota is shared across Gmail, Drive, WhatsApp, and Photos. Expanding capacity requires a Google One subscription, priced at $2 per month for 100GB or $3 for 200GB. Purchasing extra storage is often the fastest method to prevent device saturation. Within the Photos app, tapping the profile image reveals a "Free up space on this device" option, which deletes locally stored items already safely backed up to the cloud. It is critical to note that manually moving images to Trash in either app results in permanent deletion from the cloud and all synced devices after 30 days.
For those preferring manual control, the Gallery app remains a viable option if users are willing to regularly back up devices themselves. External storage drives connected via USB-C offer a physical alternative to cloud reliance. However, editing tools differ significantly between the two platforms. Gallery provides only minimal functions, including Rotate, Crop, and a few filters.
Google Photos offers a comprehensive suite of editing features, including AI enhancements. Users can adjust brightness, contrast, tone, highlights, and shadows within Photos. The app also supports blurring effects, sharpening, and the ability to move specific elements within an image. Additional options include doodling, adding text and highlights, and using a one-tap tool that automatically smoothens skin texture and whitens teeth. Since both apps can coexist on a single device, users may download Gallery from Google Play and switch between applications based on their immediate needs.
